Sewing is a favorite pasttime for crafters everywhere, but sewing also earns income for thousands of stay-at-home moms and alterations businesses. Some seamstresses sew only wedding dresses or draperies; others sew to your specification or with your pattern.

You may not have learned to sew when you were young, but you're not too old to learn. Sewing machines aren't expensive, particularly at estate sales or thrift stores, and an easy-to-read book is all you need to get started. You'll make your money back in no time if you sew for the home. Sometimes you don't even need a pattern.

We make washcloths or teatowels from old towels with scissors and a seam or two. Use another washcloth or teatowel for the pattern.

We buy jeans in any length and cut them one inch longer than we want the final length.

1. Turn under about 3/8 inch and stitch all around.
2. Turn under about 5/8 inch and stitch again.
3. You can make shorts out of your old jeans by cutting above the knee and stitching twice.

Whether you're making walking shorts or Daisy Dukes, the effort is little and the cost is free if you're using jeans you're ready to pitch out.

Sheets can make shower curtains or cafe curtains, valances or lining for garments. We use sheets for fitting patterns, too.

1. Use a sheet to cut the garment and stitch the basic seams.
2. Make adjustments to the pattern before you cut your good fabric.

Singer has a book called "Perfect Fit" that has detailed instructions for altering patterns. Some patterns have instructions for alterations as well, like this pattern we have for sale on iOffer.
